Guilford County Division of Public Well being investigates measles case
WEATHER PERMITTING. HAPPENING NOW AT 604 THOMASVILLE FIREFIGHTERS ARE ON THIS SCENE NEAR EAST GUILFORD STREET. OUR TEAM SAYS TWO OUTBUILDINGS WERE ON FIRE THERE. THAT’S WHAT YOU SEE LIVE ON YOUR SCREEN. AND THEY’RE NEXT TO A VACANT BUILDING. ONE PERSON WAS INSIDE, ACCORDING TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. NO INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. AUTHORITIES SAY THEY TOOK ONE PERSON INTO CUSTODY FOR QUESTIONING. BUT RIGHT NOW, THERE ARE NO CHARGES. THE DEPARTMENT IS STILL INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF THIS FIRE. NOW, LOOKING AHEAD TODAY, A DOBSON MAN CHARGED WITH 36 COUNTS OF SEXUALLY EXPLOITING A MINOR WILL FACE A JUDGE. SURRY COUNTY DEPUTIES ACTED ON A CYBER TIP AND ARRESTED THIS MAN, 50 YEAR-OLD JOSH FOE ON FEBRUARY SEVENTH. AUTHORITIES SEARCHED HIS HOME THAT DAY WHERE THEY SAY THEY FOUND EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THOSE 36 CHARGES. THE RANDOLPH COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAS CHARGED A FRANKLIN MAN WITH MURDER. DEPUTIES SAY THEY RESPONDED TO A REPORTED SHOOTING AT A HOME ON CLARK AVENUE YESTERDAY, WHERE THEY FOUND A WOMAN DEAD IN THE HOME, 54 YEAR-OLD ROY CLAY WILLIAMS WAS DETAINED AT THE SCENE. INVESTIGATORS HAVE NOT IDENTIFIED THE VICTIM SO FAR. WILLIAMS IS BEING HELD WITHOUT BOND. THIS MORNING. HAPPENING NOW, HAPPENING NOW. THE SEARCH CONTINUES FOR THE PARENTS OF A BABY AT THE CENTER OF A NORTH CAROLINA AMBER ALERT THAT WAS ISSUED MONDAY FOR JACKSON BROWN, WHO WAS JUST EIGHT DAYS OLD AT THE TIME. HE WAS FOUND SAFE IN DURHAM THAT SAME NIGHT. BUT AUTHORITIES SAY THERE’S BEEN NO SIGN OF HIS PARENTS DESTINY. CATHERINE OR JUSTIN BROWN. POLICE HAVE NOT SAID WHY THEY BELIEVE THE NEWBORN WAS IN DANGER WITH HIS PARENTS. TODAY IN WASHINGTON, AS THE HOUSE RETURNS, IT’S CRUNCH TIME FOR CONGRESS. A LARGE PORTION OF THE GOVERNMENT IS DAYS AWAY FROM SHUTTING DOWN. AMY LU JOINS US LIVE ON CAPITOL HILL AT THIS HOUR. AMY IS THERE ANY HOPE OF AVOIDING A SHUTDOWN? VERY POSSIBLY HERE, AUDREY AND JACKIE. AND THAT’S BECAUSE CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS AND PRESIDENT BIDEN, THEY ALL SAY THAT THEY SHOULD AVOID A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN PASS THIS FRIDAY. BUT IT’S STILL UNCLEAR HOW EXACTLY THEY PLAN TO DO THAT. AND WE HAVE BEEN WORKING IN GOOD FAITH AROUND THE CLOCK EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR MONTHS AND WEEKS. AND OVER THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS, QUITE LITERALLY AROUND THE CLOCK TO GET THAT JOB DONE. WE’RE VERY OPTIMISTIC. YEAH. LEADERS EMERGED FROM THE WHITE HOUSE AFTER A REPORTEDLY INTENSE OVAL OFFICE MEETING. PRESIDENT BIDEN, SENATE MAJORITY LEADER CHUCK SCHUMER, MINORITY LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL AND HOUSE MINORITY LEADER HAKEEM JEFFRIES ALL URGING SPEAKER MIKE JOHNSON TO KEEP THE GOVERNMENT OPEN. JOHNSON HAS YET TO REVEAL A PLAN TO PLEASE CONSERVATIVES AND MODERATES WITHIN HIS OWN PARTY, OR WHEN ENOUGH DEMOCRATIC VOTES TO PASS A BUDGET. THE SAME DISAGREEMENTS ARE STALLING FOREIGN AID. JOHNSON IS NOW THE ONLY LEADER IN EITHER PARTY WHO HAS REFUSED TO PUT TO A VOTE. A SENATE PASSED BILL SENDING MONEY TO UKRAINE, ISRAEL AND THE PACIFIC, DOUBLING DOWN ON BORDER LEGISLATION. FIRST, THERE’S A LOGIC TO SOLVING THE BORDER. WE WANT TO SOLVE IT, BUT WE HAVE TO. BUT WE HAVE TO DO UKRAINE RIGHT NOW, NOT ONLY DO WE NOT WANT TO SHUT THE GOVERNMENT DOWN, WE DON’T WANT THE RUSSIANS TO WIN IN UKRAINE. THE NEED IS URGENT. IT CONSEQUENCES OF INACTION. EVERY DAY IN UKRAINE ARE DIRE. YEAH. SO ON THE BUDGET, LAWMAKERS COULD PASS A FOURTH EXTNSION, GIVING THEM JUST A FEW WEEKS TIME TO FIGURE OUT A YEAR LONG BUDGET, WHICH WAS DUE LAST SEPTEMBER. REPORTING LIVE ON CAPITOL HILL THIS MORNING, I’M AMY LOU, WXII 12 NEWS. AMY, THANK YOU FOR THAT LIVE REPORT HERE IN THE TRIAD, A COMMUNITY IS REMEMBERING HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL COACH WHO DIED FROM COMPLICATIONS OF THE FLU. HARRISON VAUGHN DIED LAST WEEK AT THE AGE OF 25. OUR STAR CONNOR JOINS US IN STUDIO THIS MORNING WITH MORE. STARR. HOW IS HE BEING REMEMBERED? WELL, HARRISON VAUGHN, HIS LOVED ONES SAY THAT HE WAS HUMBLE AND JOYOUS, AND HE CHANNELED THAT JOY INTO THE ROW OF CALVARY DAY SCHOOLS. HEAD VARSITY BASEBALL COACH. NOW, RIGHT NOW IN CLEMMONS, THE TEAM IS PLAYING THEIR FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON AND THE THREE VAUGHN, EVEN THOUGH HE’S NOT HERE, THE TWO WILL. EVEN THOUGH HE’S NOT HERE, HIS IMPACT IS STILL FELT ALL AROUND. WE ALL HAVE A JOURNEY HERE ON EARTH. WE ALL HAVE SOMETHING TO ACCOMPLISH. OUR SON GOD HAS DONE IN 25 YEARS. I, I PRAY THAT WHEN MY JOURNEY ENDS, I ACCOMPLISH ALL THAT HE DID. NOW CALVARY’S ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ADDS THAT VAUGHN’S LEGACY WILL CONTINUE TO INSPIRE STUDENTS AND STAFF FOR YEARS TO COME, AND A GO FUND ME HAS BEEN SET UP IN REMEMBRANCE AND TO HELP OUT HIS WIFE. THAT LINK CAN BE SEEN AND POSTED ON OUR WEBSITE WXII 12.COM IN THE STUDIO. I’M STAR CONNOR FOR WXII 12 NEWS. TIME NOW IS 609. A PRIVATE HBCU IN RALEIGH IS PLANNING TO SUE AFTER ITS ACCREDITATION WAS TERMINATED, AND SAINT AUGUSTINE’S APPEAL WAS DENIED BY THE SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS COMMISSION JUST LAST WEEK. UNIVERSITY LEADERS ADMITTED THEY’RE IN A VERY DIRE FINANCIAL SITUATION. LAWYERS REPRESENTING THE UNIVERSITY PLAN TO FILE AN INJUNCTION REQUESTING THAT THE COURTS WEIGH IN ON THIS CASE. THE SCHOOL SAYS IT WILL REMAIN ACCREDITED DURING THAT TIME FRAME. EXPANDING SCHOOL BREAKFAST FOR STUDENTS SEVEN LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE AMONG NEARLY FOUR DOZEN IN OUR STATE RECEIVING GRANT MONEY. GOVERNOR ROY COOPER S OFFICE SAYS THE FUNDING TOTALS $1.3 MILLION. THE DISTRICTS BENEFITING FROM THE MONEY ARE LISTED ON YOUR SCREEN. THOSE INCLUDE ASHEBORO CITY, GUILFORD, ROCKINGHAM, SURRY, WILKES AND YADKIN COUNTY SCHOOLS. GUILFORD PREPARATORY ACADEMY, CHARTER SCHOOL ALSO MADE THE EXPANSION LIST. LOOKING AHEAD TODAY, A GREENSBORO CHURCH WILL ONCE AGAIN COME TOGETHER TO HELP FAMILIES IN NEED. WELLS MEMORIAL CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST WILL BE HANDING OUT BOXES FILLED WITH PRODUCE AND CANNED GOODS, STARTING AT 11 A.M., AND YOU’RE TAKING A LOOK AT SOME VIDEO OF CHURCH MEMBERS PREPARING THE BOXES FOR A PREVIOUS FOOD GIVEAWAY. EACH BOX TODAY WILL CONTAIN ENOUGH FOOD TO FEED A FAMILY OF FOUR. THE CHURCH IS LOCATED ON EAST WASHINGTON STREET IN GREENSBORO. THE PRICE OF YOUR NEXT MEAL AT WENDY’S COULD CHANGE DEPENDING ON WHAT TIME YOU ORDER IT. THE FAST FOOD CHAIN ANNOUNCED IT WILL START TESTING UBER LIKE SURGE CHARGES NEXT YEAR. THIS MEANS PRICES FOR WENDY’S MENU ITEMS COULD CHANGE DEPENDING ON TIME, LOCATION AND DEMAND. THE COMPANY WILL SPEND $20 MILLION TO ROLL OUT DIGITAL MENU BOARDS TO ALLOW ALL U.S. COMPANY OWNED RESTAURANTS BY THE END OF NEXT YEAR. SURGE PRICING IS NOT NEW TO AMERICAN CONSUMERS, BUT IT REMAINS TO BE SEEN IF PEOPLE WILL BALK AT ITS USE AT FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS. STILL AHEAD HERE AT SIX HIGH WINDS AND DRY WEATHER FUELING WILDFIRES HOW STATE OFFICIALS ARE RESPONDING AS EVACUATION ORDERS CONTINUE IN TEXAS. AND WE’RE KEEPING AN EYE ON THE WEATHER THIS MORNING. WARM WINDS HAVE KEPT TEMPERATURES VERY MILD. WE’VE GOT A LITTLE RAIN IN THE AREA RIGHT NOW, BUT CONDITIONS LOOKING FORWARD ARE GOING TO GET GUSTIER AS THE DAY WEARS ON AND A STRONG LINE OF STORMS WILL MOVE THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON, LIKELY BRINGING RAIN TO THE AREA AND A BIG COOL DOWN LATER THIS WEEK. WE’LL TACKLE SOME OF THE NUMBERS ON THIS FORECAST COMING UP. PLUS, THE CAMPAIGN TO REDUCE IMPAIRED DRIVING IS EXPANDING ACROSS NORTH CAROLINA. ADRIANNA HARGROVE WILL BREAK DOWN THOSE CHANGES IN JUST A FEW. WE ARE BACK NOW AT 615 IN TEXAS. EVACUATED ORDERS ARE IN PLACE AS MASSIVE WILDFIRES BURN THROUGH THE PANHANDLE. THIS IS THE SMOKEHOUSE CREEK FIRE IN HUTCHINSON COUNTY. IT’S ALREADY BURNED 200,000 ACRES, THOUGH AS OF YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, IT WAS 0% CONTAINED AND A MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDER WAS ISSUED FOR THE SURROUNDING AREAS. STRONG WINDS AND LOW HUMIDITY HAVE FUELED THE FIRE TO SPREAD QUICKLY AND FAR, NOW REACHING INTO OKLAHOMA. THIS COMES AS A NEW REPORT FROM THE NORTH CAROLINA FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE SHOWS FIRE DEATHS IN OUR STATE FOR 2023. YEAH, THEY WERE DOWN SLIGHTLY FROM PREVIOUS YEARS, BUT NORTH CAROLINA DID EXPERIENCE. 146 TOTAL FIRE DEATHS IN 2023. THERE WAS 151 REPORTED DEATHS IN 2022. GUILFORD COUNTY HAD THE HIGHEST THREE YEAR AVERAGE OF DEATHS WITH 22. THE FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE SAYS THAT INDICATES A NEED FOR TARGETED FIRE SAFETY INITIATIVES, SUCH AS OUTFITTING HOMES WITH SMOKE ALARMS AND RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT FIRE PREVENTION MEASURES, AND THAT REPORT WAS RELEASED JUST DAYS BEFORE THE START OF SPRING WILDFIRE SEASON HERE IN NORTH CAROLINA. THAT BEGINS ON FRIDAY. THE STATE FOREST SERVICE IS URGING PEOPLE TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL BURNING ANYTHING OUTDOORS. THEY SAY. LAST YEAR, FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO MORE THAN 5300 WILDFIRES ACROSS THE STATE. ESCAPED DEBRIS WERE LEADING CAUSE. THEY ADD 99% OF WILDFIRES WERE DIRECTLY RELATED TO HUMAN ACTIVITY. SO HERE ARE SOME TIPS FIREFIGHTERS RECOMMEND FOR SAFE BURNING. THEY INCLUDE STAYING WEATHER AWARE AND AGAIN, NOT BURNING ON DRY OR WINDY DAYS. STAY WITH YOUR FIRE UNTIL IT’S COMPLETELY OUT AND NEVER USE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS TO SPEED UP DEBRIS BURNING. IT’S A WINDY DAY TODAY. BRIAN SLOCUM SLOCUM HAS BEEN TELLING US ABOUT THAT SO CERTAINLY NOT THE DAY TO DO ANY SORT OF OUTDOOR BURNING. NO FALL AND SPRING TEND TO BE THE SEASON JUST BECAUSE WE HAVE A LOT OF DRY AIR AROUND THAT CAN REALLY DRY LEAVES AND TWIGS DOWN PRETTY QUICKLY. YOU ALSO SEE SOME WARM WEATHER AND SOME WINDY WEATHER DURING THOSE TIMES. AND THOSE REALLY ARE THE BIG THREE INGREDIENTS THAT WE SEE. I MEAN, WE HAD A HIGH OF 62 DEGREES YESTERDAY. IT WAS IN THE 50S FOR MOST OF THE AFTERNOON, BUT TEMPERATURES DID SURGE WITH THE WINDS PICKING UP LATE AND TEMPERATURES ACTUALLY ROSE ALL EVENING RIGHT BEFORE THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT. WE GOT INTO THE 60S AND HIGH OF 62 DEGREES, ABOUT FIVE DEGREES ABOVE THE NORM. THE LOW FOR YESTERDAY WAS ONLY 49, SO WE DIDN’T REALLY COOL ALL THAT MUCH. AND MORNING TEMPERATURES ARE EVEN WARMER THAN THAT. WINDS ARE STILL BLOWING STRONGLY SOUTH WINDS AT ABOUT 15 IN ASHEBORO ON AVERAGE ABOUT 10 TO 20MPH, AND THE WINDS ARE STARTING TO PICK UP IN SOME OF OUR WESTERN COUNTIES AS WELL. THEY’VE BEEN A LITTLE ON THE GUSTY SIDE TO GUSTS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE TODAY, BUT WE HAVE HAD A GUST OF 32MPH PRETTY CONSISTENTLY. LEE AT PTI AIRPORT THIS MORNING. FARTHER WEST, THE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO GET GUSTIER TODAY, ESPECIALLY AS THAT FRONT APPROACHES. AND WE DO HAVE A WIND ADVISORY THAT GOES INTO EFFECT AT 1:00 THIS AFTERNOON FOR BOTH THE MOUNTAINS AND THE FOOTHILLS. THERE WIND GUSTS COULD EXCEED 40 AND GET AS HIGH AS 55MPH. TODAY. THAT COULD CAUSE SOME ISSUES. WE’VE HAD A LITTLE BIT OF RAIN THAT SOFTENED THE GROUND A BIT MORE, AND WHEN YOU ADD WIND TO THAT, SOME OF THOSE TOP HEAVY TREES COULD TOPPLE AND THAT COULD CAUSE SOME SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES. ALSO WATCH FOR BLOWING DEBRIS IN THOSE AREAS. THE WINDS BEGIN TO SUBSIDE THIS EVENING, BUT THEY’LL CHANGE DIRECTION BEFORE THAT HAPPENS, BRINGING IN A COLDER WIND FOR LATER THIS EVENING. A FEW SPRINKLES ARE OUT AND ABOUT TODAY. I CAN’T RULE OUT A STRAY SHOWER BEFORE THE MAIN LINE COMES IN. THAT’S GOING TO OCCUR ALONG THE COLD FRONT, SO WE HAVE WARM SURGE OF AIR OUT AHEAD OF IT, DRIVING TEMPERATURES TO NEAR 70. DESPITE THE CLOUD COVER. AND THEN COLDER WINDS REPLACE THAT LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EVENING HOURS. NOW STRONG STORMS HAVE BEEN ONGOING ALL NIGHT LONG. PORTIONS OF KENTUCKY, OHIO, BACK INTO PENNSYLVANIA, AND EVEN PARTS OF WEST VIRGINIA. I THINK THE INGREDIENTS THAT HAVE COME TOGETHER TO BRING ABOUT THOSE STRONG STORMS WILL PULL APART TO SOME DEGREE. WE WILL HAVE STRONG STRAIGHT LINE WIND POSSIBILITIES, ESPECIALLY ALONG ANY THUNDERSTORMS THAT POP UP. AND NOTICE THE FORECAST GUSTS LOOKING PRETTY LOFTY. THIS MODEL TENDS TO INCREASE THOSE PEAK WIND GUSTS A LITTLE BIT MORE THAN WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS, BUT GUSTS OVER 40 WILL BE A POSSIBILITY. NOTICE AS WE START TO SEE A CHANGE IN THE WIND DIRECTION LATE IN THE AFTERNOON, IN THE EVENING, AND I THINK AFTER ABOUT NINE, TEN, 11:00 TONIGHT, THOSE WIND GUSTS WILL START TO COME DOWN. WE’RE STARTING OUT THE DAY CLOSE TO 60 DEGREES. SUNDAY MORNING WE WERE IN THE UPPER 20S, SO MAJOR CHANGES THERE. RAIN CHANCES LIMITED THROUGH THE MORNING START TO PICK UP IN THE AFTERNOON. OUR IMPACT WINDOW FOR ROUGH WEATHER WILL LIKELY OCCUR MID TO LATE AFTERNOON AND PERHAPS EVEN INTO THE EARLY EVENING, DEPENDING ON THE TIMING OF THAT WAVE OF RAIN COMING IN. WINDS WILL BE GUSTY THROUGHOUT THE DAY EVEN BEFORE THAT OCCURS, BUT WE ARE HAVE AN IMPACT DAY IN PLACE FOR HIGH RAIN CHANCES FOR THE TRIAD IN THE FOOTHILLS AND MOUNTAINS. IT IS IN FACT IN PLACE FOR THOSE HIGH RAIN CHANCES, BUT ALSO FOR THE GUSTY WINDS. WINDS COULD GUST AS HIGH AS 45MPH. TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 60S IN THE FOOTHILLS AND UPPER 50S FOR THE MOUNTAINS. TODAY, WITH AN EARLY ARRIVAL THAT RAIN AND THAT WILL START TO DIMINISH AS WE GO INTO THE THE DINNER HOUR LATER ON TONIGHT. ME MUCH COLDER DAY TOMORROW. TEMPERATURES BOTTOM OUT NEAR IF NOT BELOW FREEZING EARLY THURSDAY OR IN THE 50S THROUGH FRIDAY WITH INCREASING AFTERNOON RAIN CHANCES. WET WEATHER FRIDAY NIGHT WILL BEGIN TO TAPER OFF EARLY IN THE DAY ON SATURDAY. HAPPY WEDNESDAY EVERYONE! THIS IS ANOTHER LOOK OF YOUR TRAFFIC. THIS IS I-73 I-840 AT FINDLAY AVENUE IN GREENSBORO. WHAT A GOOD WAY TO START OFF YOUR MORNING AS THERE’S NO SLOWDOWNS ON THAT STRETCH. LOOKING AT TRAFFIC FLOW IN THE PIEDMONT TRIAD AREA, THERE’S NO CRASHES OR CLOSURES TO WORRY ABOUT AT THIS TIME. THE CRASH IN FORSYTH COUNTY ALONG U.S. 158 AT REIDSVILLE CHURCH HAS CLOSED AT THIS TIME. NOW, AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN IN SEVEN COUNTIES IN NORTH CAROLINA LAST YEAR, BOOZE IT AND LOSE IT CAMPAIGN UPGRADES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED ACROSS THE STATE IN THE COMING MONTHS. NOW, ACCORDING TO THE D.O.T., THE NUMBER OF ALCOHOL RELATED CRASHES IN THE SEVEN COUNTY REGION TOTALED 277 LAST YEAR. THAT’S DOWN 7% FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR. THE PILOT PROJECT INCLUDED NEW TOOLS, UPGRADED TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT AND COURT OFFICIALS, ENHANCED COMMUNICATION AND INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH UNIVERSAL AND BUSINESS GROUPS. NOW, IT ALSO INCLUDED AN EXPANDED USE OF CONTINUOUS ALCOHOL MONITORING, ANKLE BRACELETS FOR SELECT DRIVING WHILE IMPAIRED OFFENDERS STILL AHEAD, LEARNING NEW SKILLS AND APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM IN THE TRIAD IS CURRENTLY TAKING APPLICANTS. THE THREE INDUSTRIES IT’S SETTING STUDENTS UP FOR SUCCESS IN. WELCOME BACK HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS IN THE TRIAD CAN GET A LESSON OUTSIDE OF THEIR NORMAL CLASSROOM. THAT’S THROUGH RANDOLPH COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM, AND THE APPLICATION PERIOD FOR THAT CLOSES SOON. SO THE DIRECTOR STOPPED BY ON THE THE LOCAL VIBE YESTERDAY TO TELL US MORE ABOUT IT. MANUFACTURING IS HUGE IN RANDOLPH COUNTY, SO THAT WAS ONE OF OUR PRIMARY GOALS IS TO FIND STUDENTS THAT WERE INTERESTED AND GET THEM INTERESTED INTO MANUFACTURING CAREERS FOR OUR COUNTY AND THOSE LEADERS FROM MANUFACTURING AND OUR SCHOOLS MET TOGETHER WITH GUILFORD APPRENTICESHIP PARTNERS AND THE STATE APPRENTICESHIP NC OFFICE, AND TOGETHER WE DEVELOPED APPRENTICESHIP RANDOLPH. IT WAS AND STILL IS IMPORTANT TO US TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS KNOW THAT THEY HAVE OPTIONS. NOT ALL STUDENTS WANT TO GO TO A FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITY, WHETHER THAT BE DUE TO THE TIME THAT IT TAKES TO GET THROUGH, OR FINANCES OR WHAT HAVE YOU. AND NOT ALL STUDENTS WANT TO GO STRAIGHT TO THE TO THE WORKFORCE OR ENLIST. UM, SO APPRENTICESHIP RANDOLPH GIVES THEM ANOTHER OPTION THAT WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT. OUR TAGLINE IS COLLEGE CAREER ZERO DEBT. SO APPRENTICESHIP RANDOLPH IS A HIGH SCHOOL. EARN AND LEARN PROGRAM, AND IT’S DESIGNED TO GET STUDENTS ENGAGED IN LOCAL AND DEMAND CAREER FIELDS. I MENTIONED THE MANUFACTURING PART. WE’RE ALSO INTO AUTOMOTIVE AND IT FOR OUR HIGH SCHOOLERS TO GIVE THEM SOME MORE OPTIONS WITHIN OUR COUNTY. UH, WE PAIR STUDENTS WITH THE COMPANIES AND THEY GET A COLLEGE DEGREE FROM RANDOLPH COMMUNITY COLLEGE. THREE YEARS OF PAID ON THE JOB TRAINING AND A BRIGHT FUTURE, ALL WITH NO COLLEGE DEBT. SO IT’S A GREAT PROGRAM. UM, AND THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION FOR APPRENTICESHIP RANDOLPH IS MARCH 10TH. TO LEARN MORE, JUST VISIT. TRIAD CW.COM. A BATTLE OVER BUMP STOCKS. I’M AMY LU AND WASHINGON WITH THE SUPREME COURT CASE TODAY CHALLENGING A TRUMP ERA BAN. ALSO COMING UP AT 630. THE COUNTDOWN TO NORTH CAROLINA’S PRIMARY CONTINUES. WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT THE IMPORTANT ELECTION DATES TO KEEP IN MIND AS WE APPROACH SUPER TUESDAY AND SPRING IS IN THE AIR FOR SURE. WE’VE GOT SOME VERY WARM WEATHER THIS MORNING. IT’S ACTUALLY FEELING A LITTLE WEIRD OUTSIDE NOW. THE RAIN CHANCES WILL START TO INCREASE TODAY. INCLUDE SOME CHANCE FR SOME SEVERE WEATHER ACROSS PARTS OF THE SOUTHEAST AND THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION. WE’LL TALK ABOUT OUR THUNDER THREAT HERE LOCALLY. COMING UP. WE’RE UP WITH YOU, TRIAD. AND YOU’RE WATCHING WCNC II 12 NEWS AT SIX. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WAKING UP WITH US HERE ON WXII 12 NEWS WITH A LIVE LOOK OUTSIDE NOW OVER NORTH CAROLINA A AND T STATE UNIVERSITY THERE. AND IT IS 630 ON THE DOT NOW AS YOU WAKE UP. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. UH, IT’S A LITTLE MUGGY OUT THERE, I WOULD SAY, WHICH IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO USE THAT WORD. IT’S WEIRD BECAUSE I LIKE THE MUGGINESS. YEAH, I LIKE IT BETTER THAN THE FREEZING COLD. THAT’S TRUE. I GUESS IT FEELS LIKE A WARM HUG WHEN YOU WALK OUTSIDE. YEAH, KIND OF COZY. YEAH. AND A WARM WIND TOO. ON TOP OF THAT, IT’S PRETTY. PRETTY GUSTY OUT THERE ALREADY TODAY. AND WINDS ARE GOING TO BE ONE OF A COUPLE OF ISSUES THAT WE’RE GOING TO HAVE OVER THE AREA TODAY. SO I’M GOING TO COVER THE WEATHER PART. AND THEN WE’RE GOING TO TOSS IT OVER TO ADRIANA. AND SHE’S GOING TO TALK ABOUT HOW THE ROADS ARE SHAPING UP EARLY ON TODAY. TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING. YEAH. THIS IS THIS IS CORRECT. WE’RE IN THE 60S RIGHT NOW. UH, TEMPERATURES THAT ONLY GOT INTO THE UPPER MID 50S IN THE AFTERNOON DID CONTINUE WARMING INTO THE EVENING. AND WE DID GET IN THE LOWER 60S AT THE STROKE OF 11:00 LAST NIGHT. AND WE STAYED THERE BEFORE MIDNIGHT AND TEMPERATURES HAVEN’T FALLEN MUCH AT ALL. MAYBE A COUPLE OF DEGREES AFTER A HIGH OF 62 AGAIN JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT. FEW STRAY RAINDROPS ARE OUT THERE. YOU CAN SEE THERE’S A MUCH BIGGER LINE OF SHOWERS AND STORMS FORMING. THERE’S BEEN SOME SEVERE WEATHER ALONG THIS BOUNDARY, AND TORNADO WATCH AND EVEN A FEW WARNINGS IN PORTIONS OF KENTUCKY AND MOVING INTO SOUTHERN OHIO AND MUCH OF WEST VIRGINIA DURING THE OVERNIGHT. WE’RE DEALING WITH MOSTLY A FEW PATCHY SPRINKLES, IF NOT LIGHT SHOWERS OVER THE AREA THIS MORNING. RAINFALL COVERAGE WILL PICK UP THIS AFTERNOON TO LEVELS THAT WILL BE IMPACTFUL. HIGH RAIN CHANCES LATER TODAY. SOUTHWEST WINDS AT 10 TO 20 ALREADY THIS MORNING WITH THE OCCASIONAL GUEST GETTING ABOVE 30MPH, ESPECIALLY AT PTI AIRPORT. THE TRIAD IS NOT UNDER A WIND ADVISORY, BUT THE FOOTHILLS AND MOUNTAINS ARE TWO IMPACTS TODAY. THE WIND AND THE HIGH RAIN CHANCES THERE. LATER ON IN THE DAY. TODAY THAT STARTS AT 1:00 THIS AFTERNOON AND GOES UNTIL 1 A.M. EARLY THURSDAY MORNING FOR GUSTS THAT MAY EXCEED 40 OR EVEN 50MPH. I’D GO WITH A WINDBREAKER EARLY ON. YOU REALLY NEED A HEAVY COAT FOR SURE. WITH TEMPERATURES AS MILD AS THEY ARE HIGH, NEAR 70. GO WITH THE RAIN JACKET OVER THE UMBRELLA TODAY WITH A STRONG WINDS THAT WE’RE FORECASTING, WE COULD SEE A LOT OF BROKEN UMBRELLAS ACROSS THE AREA TODAY. IF YOU’RE HEADED OUT TO DINNER, WE EXPECT TEMPERATURES TO FALL SHARPLY LATER ON TONIGHT. BUT AGAIN, HIGH RAIN CHANCES WILL BE HIGHEST DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS TODAY. BUT SO FAR, SO GOOD. FROM A WEATHER PERSPECTIVE. REGARDING THIS MORNING’S MORNING COMMUTE, LET’S CHECK IN WITH ADRIANA AND SEE HOW THINGS ARE REALLY SHAPING UP. YEAH, BRIAN, THE MORNING COMMUTE SO FAR IS GOING GOOD. OF COURSE, THERE WAS A CRASH EARLIER, BUT THAT HAS CLEARED UP NOW. THIS IS A LIVE LOOK AT I-40 AT RANDLEMAN ROAD IN GREENSBORO. EVERYTHING’S LOOKING GOOD OUT THERE ON THAT PARTICULAR STRETCH. SO IF THAT IS PART OF YOUR MORNING COMMUTE, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT AS YOU START YOUR DAY. HAPPY WEDNESDAY EVERYONE. OH, ACCORDING TO THE NORTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, THERE HAVE BEEN 256 FLU DEATHS IN NORTH CAROLINA SINCE OCTOBER. MOST ADULTS 65 YEARS OR OLDER AND THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT SAYS THAT DEADLY CASES PEAKED THE WEEK OF JANUARY 6TH, WITH 54 ADULT DEATHS REPORTED. FLU CASES HAVE DECLINED SINCE THE START OF THE YEAR, AND HOSPITAL DATA SHOWS THAT LAST WEEK THERE WERE 900 CASES REPORTED IN HOSPITALS IN NORTH CAROLINA. THAT’S COMPARED TO 2300 CASES THE FIRST WEEK OF JANUARY. LEE IN THE STUDIO STAR CONNOR FOR WXII 12 NEWS. I’M ADULTS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES ARE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH COLORECTAL CANCER AT YOUNGER AGES. THE LATEST DATA FROM THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY SHOWS ONE IN EVERY FIVE NEW CASES ARE IN PEOPLE IN THEIR EARLY 50S OR YOUNGER, ACCORDING TO A STUDY BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH. THERE ARE FOUR COMMONLY REPORTED SIGNS ABDOMINAL PAIN, — BLEEDING, DIARRHEA, AND IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA. OHIO STATE’S COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER SAYS COLONOSCOPIES SAVE LIVES IN THESE CASES FOR THOSE AT AVERAGE RISK, IT’S NOW RECOMMENDED TO GET THAT PROCEDURE AT AGE 45. COLORECTAL CANCER IS ALWAYS THOUGHT TO BE A DISEASE OF OF OLDER PEOPLE. HOWEVER, WE KNOW THAT AGE IS NOT THE ONLY FACTOR THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THIS, AND WE’RE SEEING A RISE IN PATIENTS IN THEIR 30S AND 40S ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND HE SAYS THERE ARE SOME COLORECTAL CANCER RISK FACTORS YOU CAN’T CONTROL, LIKE FAMILY OR PERSONAL HEALTH HISTORY. BUT THERE ARE SOME TIPS LIKE HAVING A HEALTHY DIET, GETTING PLENTY OF EXERCISE AND AVOIDING SMOKING AND HEAVY ALCOHOL USE. THE SUPREME COURT IS HEARING ARGUMENTS THIS MORNING ABOUT A TRUMP ERA BAN ON BUMP STOCKS, THE GUN ATTACHMENTS THAT ALLOW SEMI-AUTO WEAPONS TO FIRE LIKE MACHINE GUNS. AMY LU IS IN OUR WASHINGTON BUREAU THIS MORNING WITH WHAT IS AT STAKE IN THIS CASE. THIS CASE IS NOT ABOUT THE SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS. IT’S INSTEAD ABOUT WHETHER THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION FOLLOWED FEDERAL LAW BY CHANGING BUMP STOCK REGULATION. THE REGULATION WAS PUT IN PLACE BY THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT IN 2019 AFTER A GUNMAN USING RIFLES WITH BUMP STOCKS KILLED 60 PEOPLE AT A LAS VEGAS MUSIC FESTIVAL. THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION DECIDED THAT BUMP STOCKS SHOULD BE CLASSIFIED AS MACHINE GUNS, EFFECTIVELY BARRING PEOPLE FROM USING THEM. THE BAN ON BUMP STOCKS HAS BEEN WORKING ITS WAY THROUGH THE COURTS EVER SINCE THE LOUISIANA FIFTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS RULED IN JANUARY, CARY THAT CONGRESS WOULD HAVE TO CHANGE FEDERAL LAW TO BAN BUMP STOCKS, NOT THE PRESIDENT. THE JUSTICES ARE NOW REVIEWING THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION’S APPEAL OF THE FIFTH CIRCUIT’S RULING IN WASHINGTON. I’M AMY LU. IN COMMITMENT, 2024 NORTH CAROLINA AND 15 OTHER STATES ARE GETTING READY FOR THEIR PRIMARY ELECTIONS ON SUPER TUESDAY.
